Every blogger likes comments. It means that they’ve connected in some way to their reader, enough for them to feel that want to take the time and effort to give you feedback. The commenter may not always agree with what you say, but all feedback is positive.
This blog doesn’t receive lots of comments, but that’s fine – it’s not specialising in any niche market, it rarely gets lots of quality traffic (the traffic it used to get from Entrecard couldn’t really be described as good quality), and I don’t know how many friends and family actually read the stuff I post. I’m not trying to earn a living from the adverts here (so poor, I’ve actually removed them again), and any comments I do get are exciting and greatly appreciated.
One plugin I’ve got for WordPress is Alex King’s Twitter Tools and this allows me to automatically send a tweet to my followers whenever a new blog post is made. Combine this with scheduled posts within WordPress itself, and it means you can effectively schedule tweets to appear at a time when you would otherwise be sleeping!
As for the content itself, obviously good well though-out content, perhaps with some degree of going-against-the-grain to provoke a reaction will normally produce content. The only other technique I’ve picked up from others, is to end the content with a question, to provide the reader a hook on which to encourage them to start their comment.
So, with irony duly noted, how do you try to attract more comments?

One way I’ve heard *actually works* is using Commentluv. Apparently, it’s akin to giving back to the readers in a non-monetary sense…a lot of bloggers have reported above average gains in readership using Commentluv.
Another way(this makes a lot more sense), is participating in relevant forums. For example, I’m a finance buff…so I’d comment at other finance buff blogs. Make quality comments not just ask questions. You get hitbacks(insert techy term here)….
Same thing with forums. Howdya think I’m here on your blog Gary?
You build a brand rep and people wanna know what ELSE you have to say…
